The interview: judging a book by its cover.

The interview: judging a book by its cover.

In an interview, whether remote or face to face, you will be probed, you will be emotionally prodded, scrutinised and examined.

Your ideas, values and ethics will be clinically dissected: the implications of every answer will be analysed. You will be goaded, challenged and provoked into reacting.

To succeed at interview you’ll have to deal with all of this, but you won’t even get the opportunity to do so unless your dress and grooming are up to scratch.

Even though the Roman poet Virgil, 70 BC to 19 BC, told us not to trust too much in appearances - the forerunner of "Don't judge a book by its cover" - most interviewers still expect interviewees to be smartly and appropriately attired - even for remote video interviews.

The human psyche always seems to default to "first impressions count"!

Therefore, make sure you get the opportunity to be probed, prodded, scrutinised, dissected and challenged by first of all ensuring that the first impression you make does indeed impress: for remote interviews this also means making sure your lighting, setting and backdrop are suitable, fitting and appropriate!
