Mick was in the army and was in the Physical Training Corp, so design and development was his business. Good soldiers dropped out for no apparent reason and discovering the reasons behind it and helping them become good soldiers and ultimately great human beings became his passion.

For the past 4 years I have been helping to coordinate a Mentoring Programme for five Local Authorities in Wales (Newport, Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Torfaen and Monmouthshire) under the banner of the University of South Wales. This includes the Mentoring of individuals/teams who work in each LA, the training and development of Mentors and the deployment and monitoring of those Mentors to work with Sports Clubs throughout the region. In this time, we have called upon a number of outside agencies to provide Continual Professional Development programmes for all personnel within the scheme. However, the work conducted by Spectrum Affiliates has exceeded all our expectations, proved very impressive and, as such, we are in the middle of planning for a comprehensive programme of services with them.

Our workforce is constantly trying to help people to embrace positive change in work, sport and life generally and we feel that Spectrum can make us better informed and more able to initiate this change by working with their team. As their philosophy states ‘Spectrum leads people into change gently and is easy to embrace and use with even the most nervous recipient. I have had the privilege of working with Mick over the past three years. As the Head Coach of
Hong Kong Sevens Men's and Women's Programmes, it was apparent from early in my tenure that
the element of mental preparation for performance was not something that these groups had been
exposed to and in my opinion this was inhibiting performance.

Working closely with Mick within training and competition environments, we were able to identify areas for development for both individuals and team. From this we formulated strategies which provided frameworks for changing behaviour on both of these levels and this led to increases in performance.

The fundamental catalyst for this transformation was how Mick was able to coach myself and my
staff into a space which enabled effective delivery of these strategies. Without his understanding of
us as sports coaches and his ability to communicate the process which stimulates behavioural
change in others, we would not have made the gains which we witnessed over this period.

Further, on a personal level, Mick’s performance coaching has provided me with a framework for
effective reflection and evaluation of my own teaching and something that now stands as the
foundation of my delivery.
