Do you already have a website? Is your website built in WordPress? If it is then you’re not alone. WordPress is probably the most popular content management system currently in use. It is estimated that around 20% of websites use it.

Due to this popularity it is also one of the most popular systems for would be hackers to attempt to access. No site is 100% secure but steps can be taken to improve the security of a WordPress site.

  1. Update WordPress Regularly

WordPress is regularly updated so that your platform can be optimised with new features, some of the features include security updates.  Always make sure that you keep WordPress updated to the latest version as this ensures your site is more secure than before.
  2. Change the Default Admin Username

When installed, WordPress always sets up Admin as the default username but changing it gives you a chance to gain more security. You can create a new administrator account and delete the default one assigning all data content to the new account.
  1. Take regular backups of your site

If you are regularly adding new posts and articles or updating information that you have online for your clients, the last thing you want is to suddenly find that your site has been hacked and the only copy of the site you have is the original site uploaded by your developer.

There are third party backup plugins available that can be installed and configured to backup your site automatically at regular intervals.

  1. Summary

WordPress has tried to provide security features on its platform, but it is ultimately up to you to make sure that your site is as secure as possible.  Hackers can find it fun just to disrupt your service; therefore, you have to try your best to optimise your security technique as much as you can.

OwlTree can supply a security review for a one off cost to help improve your site’s security even further. Please contact us for further details.
