As a nation, we need to enhance our health more than ever. Statistics and the consensus denote we are becoming unhealthier at an alarming rate. Heart disease, diabetes, cancer, autoimmune issues and everyday illnesses and ailments are on the rise.
The nation's health does not look like it will be changing anytime soon, unless...
Each one of us chooses to take the first step to heal those physical compensations, stinking thinking and emotional unrest that we live with on a daily basis. I for one, know it’s not easy to make a decision to live a healthy life, due to the way I was raised and conditioned into certain habits of thinking, behaviours and actions that did not promote and cultivate health and well-being.
Those engrained patterns were not easy to change, but with some self-will and determination, I found a way, as the last thing i wanted was to continue suffering. I got to the point where enough was enough and chose to take responsibility, because i realized nobody else can make the decision for me. Surgeries, pharmaceutical drugs and perpetual doctors’ visits were merely band-aids and keeping me stuck.
When I started, there were a myriad of unhealthy habits that had to change and without educating myself, i would carry on spinning my wheels. It was well worth it to invest some time, energy and money into this health venture and I also hired a holistic health practitioner to help guide and teach me for a while.
Very soon after implementing some changes like exercise, stretching, dietary adjustments, filtered water, a better sleep rhythm, breathing and meditation I hastily made improvements, which only motivated me to do more. Then I was able to go it alone and then realized I desired to be a health practitioner who wanted to help others improve their health, which soon became my life ambition and overarching dream. That was 22yrs ago and now after much incessant study, diligent daily practice and some fine tweaking I have created a simple health system that quickly gets results.
New Information and Habits
There is very little emphasis on genuine health education in society and what we believe and practice needs to shift otherwise progress is limited.
The six foundational health principles of movement, nutrition, hydration, breathing, thinking and sleep are the essential habits that must be consistently practiced.
Most of the population believes it's ok to eat processed food, pasteurised products, conventionally raised meats, farm raised fish, veg and fruit that's been sprayed with pesticides and consume from fast food joints like MacDonald’s, Wimpy, KFC and even much of the food in the supermarkets has toxic additives.
Water is the building block of life as the body is made up of about 70% water. If there is inadequate hydration, the body will breakdown very quickly, so just consuming enough water, many physical and mental issues can be resolved.
Many also do not realise how crucial movement/exercise is to maintain a functional body and maintain proper bone, muscle and nerve integrity.. Movement helps with so many conditions, blood circulation, lymphatic drainage to release toxins, muscle function and strength, and uplifting mood and wellbeing are some of the life changing benefits.
Sleep is the most important of all six and can be greatly undervalued. The ideal sleep pattern is between 10pm and 6am so if that isn’t religiously followed, there's not enough energy and motivation to practice the other five.
And as for breathing (chi gong, thi chi) and meditation practices that are so far removed from society that it's even frowned upon or seen as only weirdo's do those things. I have a conscious breathing practice that I've done everyday for nearly two decades. i cannot speak highly enough about it and the healing potential breath has to offer. It is the foundation and influencing factor for all the millions of bodily functions that occur in every moment. Breath sweeps mind!
My parents, teachers, peers and society in general did not understand what authentic health was so these six principles are quite foreign to the majority of us. We then choose to relearn with a new set of ideas and lifestyle methods that foster health and vitality.
From the moment we are born, we are subscribed to a doctor, which in of itself, diminishes the opportunity to be responsible for our own health. We believe we don’t have to think about health as it's someone else’s "job", but in doing so, we will never understand what true health represents.
On some level, we certainly need a doctor and medical knowledge, but the other hand, to be wholeheartedly reliant upon a doctor wouldn't encourage optimal health. After all, another cannot exercise for me, breathe for me, sleep for me, eat for me and ultimately think for me.
I can take all the pharmaceutical drugs and opt for every surgery in the book. However, if I’m not choosing to be fundamentally responsible and spend time with the six principles, health will be unattainable.
As I mentioned, It isn't easy to step into becoming healthier due to years of deep-rooted habits, however changing our ways does not have to be stressful or seem impossible. Having an experienced guide who can meet you where you are can make the transition easy and enjoyable. After all, choosing to become healthier is an empowering and fulfilling venture as it meets many long neglected needs..
I had to personally go through much blood, sweat and tears, stressful challenges and initiations to learn about health. Things like attempted to take on too much at once, getting mentally hung up on whether it was right or wrong and enduring some minor injuries as I was learning to know the difference, all of which made me feel like a failure, slowed down progress and even wanting to quit on occasions.
But in going through those learning processes, I became an experienced practitioner that created a system that has been simplified, so you can avoid all those pitfalls and hang-ups and potential injuries. The hard work has been done, but I understand I had to become physically broken, mentally frustrated and emotional overload before I was able to rise up from that place of pain and suffering to "master my craft.".
