How are you responding to these unprecedented changing times?

There are one of three ways you could be responding;

  1. Do nothing and wait for all of this to blow over: If you are doing nothing and simply waiting for this situation to blow because ‘Hey it’ll pass and times will be simply back to normal, right?’ I advise you to not make this mistake.

One thing we know for sure is the market and life is changing and no one has a clear understanding or prediction of what the future holds. Waiting in times like this when you may have more time on your hands, you may be working from home, then it is at this very moment that you should seize the day.

  1. Another thing you can do is try to do exactly the same as before and ‘hope’ it works: Doing something is better than nothing but the future holds some trying and difficult times. Do you honestly feel you are making the most of the situation? Do you feel that perhaps there is something more you could be doing during this time? Even if you are doing the same ‘business as usual’ approach you may have some anxieties and concerns of how the future may be. At the very least give yourself time to reflect and try to ask yourself these important questions.
  2. And lastly, you can respond in the most proactive way possible and that is to take time out (one thing you will have plenty of) and think about the things you have always wanted to do, but either never had the time or never really made the correct amount of effort. So if you are the more positive type let’s take you through a step by step approach to achieving your goals and desires that you always wanted but left to the wayside;

So how do we go about becoming that better person? How do we become like all of those successful people we see every day in social media? How do we realise our true potential? Well, there are multiple ways of doing this and I will not sugar coat it, for most, it takes a lot of effort and hard work, but is there a way by utilising the science and proven techniques to make this goal become a little bit easier and more manageable?

Exercise #1. This is a very simple exercise. I want you to make a list of things that you would like to change in yourself. These are perhaps little habits – we shall start small and work our way up.

For instance, if you have an eating problem, I don't want you to change your eating habit overnight, but what I want you to do instead is to get a little book, and in it, I want you to write down everything that you ate when you ate it. (Or you can use a mobile phone). If you have a problem with profanity, I want you to write down when and where and with whom you were when you cussed. It has to be done right there when it happens. Taking out that little book and pen and writing down whatever habit you want to get rid of every time you do it is merely a physical manifestation of being accountable for your actions. That's all I want you to do, and I want you to do it for seven straight days, EVERY time it happens. Let's not tackle things like smoking or alcohol, remember BABY STEPS. If you forget, I want you to start all over again and do it for seven days. Even if you are on the evening of the sixth day and you break it, you have to start again.  That’s it. That’s all you have to do.

Exercise #2. After you have written all of your bad habits down for a week put the book away and don’t do anything for a couple of days. You will feel the urge to do something, don’t give in- resist the urge. Then after a few days, give yourself a timeframe, you can open the book and all I want you to do is reflect on those habits. Dig up the book that you listed all the things you wanted to change from the last exercise. Go over it and look at how you did it and how often you did it. Let that sink in and ask yourself why you do it and what real gain do you get from it.
Does there seem to be any logic to it? If there is logic to it, what is it? How does it benefit you? If it doesn’t, why do you do it? Its habit, isn't it?  To change the habit all you need to do is decide that you do not need it anymore in your life and the exercise that you need to perform is to find an exact opposite habit to replace it with.
A good exercise would be to replace the ‘cake’ with a similar food that is innocuous such as a fruit or healthy snack, it’s still sweet and it’ll suffice as a substitute. When you do that, you get the reward of eating the food at the same time that is close enough to your poor eating habit and you get the reward of the habit but don’t get the poor amount of calories and nutrients.  Baby Steps, remember. Do this for seven days. Without fail, if you slip, restart the clock.

Exercise #3. You can't just jump in and hope for immediate success. As with anything, the first thing you need to do is understand what you are about to do here. The second thing is that you have to create the willpower to do the steps that you need to do to get to where you want to go and who you want to be. The third is that you need to believe that what you are about to undertake does have significant benefit for you, more so than what you have right now. Your subconscious is good at calculating the cost to benefit ratio, and it will try to sabotage you if you truly do not believe in what you are about to do is beneficial. It is one of the reasons many people fail at trying to elevate themselves - because they do not believe in what they are doing and they do not have the facts to prove it to themselves.

So the first step in this exercise is - reflection. Your first step is sincere and deep reflection. All you have to do is think about the areas in your life that you need to change and the areas in your life that you are looking at that need to be improved. You already have the data to hand from exercises 1 and 2. In these exercises, you acknowledged your poor habits and have tried to substitute new habits in there place. In this exercise, the aim is to try a rewire your thought patterns to reinforce the new pattern of behaviour.

The first character of a person who will be successful in reflection is the person that will be brutally honest with himself and a person who will take responsibility for all the things that happen to him and the causes of those things.

The moment you start with reflection and you start telling yourself that you are going to, from this day forth, take responsibility for your actions, you would have already started the changes in the neural pathways that govern your outlook on life and luck. None of this ‘power of attraction’ stuff on its own. Simply wishing for something to happen without self-reflection and brutal self-honesty, hard work, vision and desire will simply amount to nothing. Plus simply wanting something that is tangible such as a new car or a certain amount of money is fine but why stop there why not desire to be the greatest version of yourself, do you think Bill Gates and or Steve Jobs only wanted a nice car?

The second step in this exercise #3 is to allow yourself to want this greatness from yourself. Allow yourself to ask for what you want from yourself. Asking is a powerful tool and you should never discount the act of asking. Science has shown that If you are too shy to ask, that is a sure sign that you either feel that you don’t deserve it, or you are too arrogant to ask for it. Both of those characteristics will trip you up and mess with your ability to alter the neurons in your brain that will put you in the frame of achievement.

The final step is meditation. No not the woosah, sitting down crossed legged with incense and repeating a chant, no this is the original sense of the word 'to meditate over what you have achieved', to mull over your progress and repeat to yourself your success. Make sure your meditation is focused and not blank, ie trying to clear the mind. This kind of meditation is to increase your brain's conscious capacity and concentrating intently on just one thing, in this case, concentrate on the thing that you are asking for.

When you desire, believe, ask and meditate, you set up the necessary elements for your brain to change the way it is to become the way it needs to be to give you what you desire. No other method can effect faster and longer-lasting change than following the three steps that are simple. Be sure of what it is you are asking for and remain focused on it.

Many of us simply do not have the mental fortitude to want something enough to desire something that is not merely fantasy and a feeling but to focus so intently that you will achieve it no matter what.

As a boy I wanted to become a Royal Marine Commando, unfortunately, I was often quite accident-prone and suffered my fair amount of injuries. Many people said that I would not be able to surpass the rigorous training although my heart was in the right place. And low and behold during my training they were right; I broke my back in 2 places. They did, however, underestimate the power of desire with focused intent. For exactly 6 weeks after I had broken my back I was back in training and I completed arguably the hardest military basic training in the world and earned my green beret. I tell you this story not to show off my bravery, please believe me when I say there was none, my desire and intent focus surpassed everything and I was not to be denied. No amount of fantasizing and wishful thinking would have got me closer to becoming a Royal Marine Commando.

So in summary, you have now just like Willy Wonka 'the golden ticket', the greatest opportunity in your life to make the most profound changes that you can make during the next coming weeks, what will you do with your time?
