• There's an exercise I used to use in management training around motivation, though I rarely use it now. In 2 groups I would ask one group to list 5 things that motivate them, the other group 5 things that motivate their staff. The results were nearly always the same: the managers said they themselves were motivated by challenge, development etc; Their staff? By money. When you start to understand how far off the mark that is, you start to understand motivation.
