• I have a challenge for you, if you have staff who need to handle people.

I'm thinking sales agents, retail staff, customer service specialists. I don't mean people who literally "handle" people - except door and security people, that could be interesting.

I'll return to the challenge later. First, about LTERALLY handling people...

Despite the soft skills, leadership and management development workshops I present, I still like to deliver care skills training for staff occasionally. The delegates might be on little more than minimum wage, but that doesn't mean their training should be minimum quality. In fact, given that any of us tomorrow and maybe loved ones today can find themselves reliant on carers, it's a reason to ensure they absolutely get the best training available.

Also, after a few days facilitating senior executives in finding concrete meanings for mindfulness in their daily work, a day or two at the coalface of mindfulness recharges my batteries. In care, a moment's positive thought becomes a second's positive action that makes a person's whole day worth living: if that person is your elderly mother or severely disabled brother, that makes a difference to YOU too.

So this week I'm renewing my certification as a people handling trainer. I will admit I've resisted it for a few months; it's just so practical and hands on, by definition. If I'm certified to deliver that training, aren't I just like all those other care trainers...? No, I'm not, and that's another reason why I choose to keep my hand in: because I've met some dreadful care trainers and there need to be a few of us out there challenging assumptions and outdated practice.

So, to that challenge I mentioned, about your staff who "handle" people. I'd like to deliver a session to them on ACTUALLY handling people. They will learn about personal space, communication and motivation in a way that bypasses all of their preconceptions. It also requires close working and teamwork to complete very specific tasks that have a relevance to all interactions with customers. There are wellbeing benefits for staff too, not to mention health and safety - once you've moved a person safely, cardboard boxes become pretty easy.

And best of all, I'll charge you the same as I charge to deliver care training.

    Can you handle that?

I'm more than happy to talk it over. Phone me on 07780 944310, contact me through this website or e-mail handle@skillsrealized.com

    Thanks.
