• The word 'try' sets my alarm bells ringing. We use the word 'try' flippantly without thought yet the connotations behind the word give us a new meaning. When we don't want ownership, responsibility or an interest in something, we defect by using the word 'try'. You've all done it - 'I'll try to get that report to you', 'I'll try to get him to get it done', 'I'll try to stop eating crap'. Trying is a cop out, it's a get out clause to use when we can't be bothered, knowing that at least if we use the word, it seems as if we are giving it a go but if things go wrong, then it's ok...because we tried. Next time you're with a customer or a partner or anyone, listen for the word and then consider what you can then do differently. I personally question their true intentions because I don't want my time wasted or them to waste theirs. I want to be as effective as I can be and I also want them to be as effective as they can be so by eliminating try with ownership and responsibility, effective working is just around the corner.
