    I have been trawling through the Procurement Jobs advertised on the different search engines, Monster to CV Library, to name but a few. There are even adverts for jobs being published by the companies themselves. Time and again, the "must have" experience have caught my eye. Reading these lengthy and sometimes confusing job descriptions, I have to ask - who writes these requirements? Is it the Head of Procurement, his/her deputies, the HR person - who? When they ask for experience in say FM, although useful for IT and other specialist areas, why should it matter that the person have FM experience? When the true outstanding Procurement Professional apply the Procurement Methodologies, they will soon get to know the market place and be able to deliver on the requirements of the task. "They need to hit the ground running so the organisation does not have the time to get them to learn" is the subtext here. Well, if the person comes from an FM background, they will probably have some (I did not say extensive) knowledge of who the Great Suppliers are in that market and very often have biases toward who they want to use. So are you getting the best providers by going to someone already in that field or would your Procurement department and organisation not be better served by putting someone who is outstanding in Procurement methodologies, but who knows very little about FM in that place? The "having done it before" bias is very strong, but can be costly to your organisation. That is why some of the top Procurement Functions move their Procurement people around to different Category roles as a) it means that they know what is happening in other areas, b) the procurement people do not go into "automatic mode" and are constantly learning and c) the suppliers who have become comfortable with that FM procurement person/contact know that when a new guy comes in their relationship, pricing, operations, etc will be put under the microscope again, so they will be more than keen to do their best and not become complacent. So which do you want a Specialist in Procurement or Specialist in a Procurement Field?
